Interested in Cornish hedging for your garden or landscape?
We build traditional Cornish stone hedges by hand, using local materials and time-tested methods.
Each hedge is crafted with an earthen core and gentle curved batter, creating strength, beauty and a living habitat that supports wildlife.
Cornish Hedging
An ancient craft of stone
Built with stone and soil, Cornish hedges are strong, long-lasting and naturally beautiful.
Each hedge creates a living, ‘4D’ habitat for insects, birds and small mammals.
They make excellent feature walls or sculptural elements, adding texture and character to any landscape.
Cornish Hedging (Dry stone walling)
Cornish hedging is a rare form of dry stone work. Unlike many styles found around the world, these hedges have an earth core and a gentle curved batter. This gives them strength and creates a rich three dimensional habitat. Insects love the complexity and a lot of mammals use the structure for movement, hunting and shelter.
In the landscape they work as retaining walls, boundaries and features that sit naturally in their setting. When built well they look clean, balanced and add a calm structure to a garden.
Traditionally turf topped which adds an additional element for interest and wildlife. When managed correctly, native tree species can be planted densely to form a living hedge. This is then laid on a cycle with trimming and pruning, providing a wealth of heritage and ecological benifits
Ed’s focus is on building hedges that feel visually appealing and true to local tradition. He is interested in shaping more sculptural stone hedges in future work and using them within designs as features in their own right.
